Approach

How I work

A clear structure, an explicit plan, and regular reviews to make sure it's working.

The first four sessions

  • Session 1: Getting to know you: your history, how things are day to day, your safety, and what you want to be different. No trauma detail unless you offer it.
  • Session 2: Making sense of it: I explain what I think is keeping things stuck, in plain language, and we test it against your experience.
  • Session 3: Plan: the treatment approach, the expected number of sessions, and how we will know it's working.
  • Session 4 onwards: Treatment, with a formal review roughly every six sessions.

Why the approach matters less than the fit

The research is consistent: across recognised therapies, the relationship between client and therapist predicts how well therapy goes more strongly than the type of therapy. That doesn't make technique irrelevant (some approaches suit some problems better), but it does mean the first question is whether this is a working relationship you can use.

If it isn't working after three or four sessions, I'll raise it. I'd rather refer you well than keep an appointment slot filled.

Session length and frequency

Standard sessions are 50 minutes. Extended 90-minute sessions are also available. Most people start weekly or fortnightly and taper as things stabilise.

What I don't do

  • Independent medico-legal assessments of my own clients
  • Court report writing as an expert witness
  • Custody and family law assessments
  • Fitness-for-duty determinations for an employer
  • Crisis or after-hours emergency response: use 000 or Lifeline 13 11 14
